Augusta and Columbia County's strategic location provides access to the Savannah River, Lake Olmstead, the Augusta Canal and J. Strom Thurmond Dam & Lake at Clarks Hill, making the area the perfect setting for a host of water activities: swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Recognized as the water sports capital of the Southeast, Augusta is home to several annual international events including the Augusta Invitational Rowing Regatta, the Head of the South Rowing Regatta, and the Augusta Southern Nationals.

The abundant waterways host race and tournaments of all sorts, from rowing to sailing and fishing. The area hosts events in other sports as well. Hundreds of horses and riders come to town each year for the Augusta Cutting Horse Futurity and the National Barrel Horse Association Championship.
