African American Heritage

Explore the contributions of the African-American community to Augusta's history and growth and celebrate the resourcefulness, bravery and talents of this important part of the Augusta community. African-Americans put their stamp on Augusta in a variety of pursuits, from banking to education to the arts. Influential educator Lucy Craft Laney founded several schools in Augusta. National acclaimed poet and author Frank Yerby grew up here. In addition, both international opera star Jessye Norman and the "Godfather of Soul," James Brown, are Augusta natives.
