In conjunction with The Seventh Annual Morris Museum of Art Gala, Regional Dialect: American Scene Paintings from the John and Susan Horseman Collection brings together fifty-seven major works of art that examine American identity in the first half of the twentieth century. The Horseman Collection includes impressive paintings by influential artists of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940. The forty-three artists represented in Regional Dialect do not so much adhere to a single style as to a common commitment to the portrayal of American ways of life. They captured the width and breadth of the American experience whether painting Depression-era sharecroppers in the rural South or monuments of industry in the upper Midwest.

Sally Donovan received her first painting lesson from her aunt at the age of twelve. An art major in school, she studied at the Art Students League in New York City. Continuing education, motherhood, and a career in social work interrupted opportunities for her to paint consistently through the years. Her involvement in oil painting has been rekindled and for the last twenty-five years she has produced landscapes from faraway places and close to home.Several of her compositions now include figures, most often placed in the landscape setting. Using a palette of mainly primary colors, Sally mixes her colors as she goes. She strives to keep her colors clean and fresh, replicating the purity that exists in nature. Her subjects, be they landscapes, figures, or still lifes, are from original photos or are painted on site.
