History and Heritage
Georgia's second oldest city, Augusta was established in 1736 as a colonial trading post. Augusta's history includes roles in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and important contributions to American development throughout the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. A towering chimney on Augusta Canal stands a monument to the vast Confederate Powderworks that once stood on the site. The King and Sibley textile mills, built in the decades following the Civil War, still function today. Another mill-the Enterprise- has been reclaimed and revitalized and now houses offices, apartments. Tenants include the Augusta Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Augusta Canal Authority.
