The Augusta Canal National Heritage Area is headquartered in a renovated 19th Century textile mill. Georgia’s only officially designated National Heritage Area, the 8-mile waterway is the only in-tact industrial canal in the United States in continuous use since its construction in the 1840s. The towpath and nature trails offer views of the canal and Savannah River. The Augusta Canal Interpretive Center at Enterprise Mill tells the story of the Augusta Canal and the southern textile industry. History comes alive with models, movies, working mill machinery and more. See cotton become cloth and water become electricity. Award-winning exhibits tell these stories and more. “The Power of a Canal,” a 10-minute film shown in a surround-sound theater, orients visitors to the 10,000-square-foot facility. Allow 1 hour minimum. Open 7-days-a-week Mon.-Sat. 10-6, Sun. 1-6. The Petersburg Boat Guided Tours take passengers on excursion of varying lengths, passing natural and historic sites along the way, including the Confederate Powderworks Chimney and 18th Century home of Declaration of Independence Signer George Walton. 1-hour basic tours (weather permitting) daily, Monday- Saturday. Longer tours offered seasonally.
