First Christian Church & Emily Tubman Memorial
Although she bears the same name as Harriet Tubman of Undergound Railroad Fame, Emily Tubman was a white woman and 19th-century philanthropist. She is remembered for her many contributions to the Augusta community, including the First Christian Church. Several years after her husband's death in 1836, she offered her slaves the option of returning to Africa. About half accepted her offer. The Tubman returnees were among the most successful groups of former slaves to settle Liberia. The grandson on one of these migrating couples, William V.S. Tubman, was president of that country for almost 30 years.
